Ho Chi Minh City officially begins construction of Metro Line 2

On the morning of January 15, 2026, the People’s Committee of Ho Chi Minh City held the groundbreaking ceremony to officially commence construction of Metro Line 2, Ben Thanh – Tham Luong.

The groundbreaking ceremony, with the Urban Railway Management Board (MAUR) as the investor, was held at the Tham Luong Depot office building in Dong Hung Thuan ward.

Ho Chi Minh City officially commences construction of Metro Line 2, a pioneering project in the new phase.
“On the morning of January 15, 2026, the People’s Committee of Ho Chi Minh City solemnly held the groundbreaking ceremony for key infrastructure and transportation projects to celebrate the 14th National Congress of the Communist Party of Vietnam.”

Ho Chi Minh City starts construction of Metro Line 2 worth more than 55,000 billion VND, passing through 14 wards
“According to Mr. Phan Cong Bang – Head of the Ho Chi Minh City Urban Railway Management Board (MAUR), Metro Line 2 has a total length of nearly 11.27 km.

In which, the underground section is 9.3 km long, the elevated section is about 2 km. The project is invested with a scale of 10 underground stations, 1 elevated station and 1 depot area, with a total investment of more than 55,000 billion VND, using entirely Ho Chi Minh City budget capital.”

Ho Chi Minh City breaks ground on series of major infrastructure projects
“Ho Chi Minh City on Thursday morning simultaneously broke ground on a series of large-scale, strategic projects, marking a new phase in its infrastructure development drive.

Key projects include the Ben Thanh-Tham Luong metro line, the city’s second link, the Rach Chiec national sports complex, Phu My 2 Bridge, and Can Gio Bridge.”

Ho Chi Minh City starts Metro Line 2: Big step toward easier, greener travel
“At the event, Phan Cong Bang, Head of the Ho Chi Minh City Urban Railway Management Board, announced that Metro Line 2 spanning 11.3 kilometers from Ben Thanh Station through Cach Mang Thang Tam and Truong Chinh streets to Tan Binh Station will help ease severe traffic congestion along key corridors. The project, funded entirely by the city’s budget, includes 10 underground stations, one elevated station, and one depot, with a total investment of more than VND55 trillion.”

      THACO is the EPC general contractor according to local media. Haven’t seen them mention it on their site (though contractors tend to not update their websites too often).
